Leading the charge
Meet the new British Invasion, same as the old British Invasion. Well, sort of. While there’s plenty of Blur, Beatles and Britpop to the latest crop, there’s also some boogie, bass and feedback.
Does It Offend You, Yeah?
Four guys from Reading whose “We Are Rockstars” is the equivalent of binging on Red Bull and vodka and speaker-blowing New Order remixes by Daft Punk.
The Cribs
America should embrace anything Johnny Marr does (note: Electronic is the exception) and Marr just joined the Cribs. They’ve been around a few years but recently hit it big in England with single “Men’s Needs,” which will give you an idea of their Britpop take on punk.
The Heavy
New British music that’s totally un-British. The soul/rock/hip-hop foursome’s “That Kind of Man” is Curtis Mayfield resurrected without sounding retro.
These New Puritans
Dancey but edgy like a good British electro pop outfit should be, this quartet - playing Monday at Great Scott - are like fellow countrymen the Klaxons only way less awful. “Elvis” is a great download if you’re into abrasive, Kangol-sporting, shout-in-your-face dance rock.
The Ting Tings
This female frontwoman/male drummer duo - playing June 19 at Great Scott - is into the cheerleading beats of the Go Team! (good) and Tony Basil (very, very bad).

Lawyer says he'll file to dismiss case against Osama bin Laden's driver
SAN JUAN, Puerto Rico — Osama bin Laden's former driver may not go on trial this summer at Guantanamo after all.
The military lawyer for Salim Hamdan says the Supreme Court ruling on the rights of Guantanamo prisoners is likely to at least delay the Yemeni's war crimes trial.
Navy Lt. Cmdr. Brian Mizer told The Associated Press he will file a motion to dismiss the war crimes charges against Hamdan based on the court's finding that Guantanamo prisoners have constitutional rights.
The defense lawyer said Wednesday he will argue that Hamdan was denied his constitutional right to a speedy trial. The Pentagon declined immediate comment.

Lohan to take Spears' place at gala
Lindsay Lohan is to replace Britney Spears as the host of a big gala event in Los Angeles next week, according to reports.
Spears was asked to host a Scandinavian Style Mansion ball by Danish businessman Claus Hjelmbak but he rescinded the invitation last month when the star was admitted to hospital.
Explaining his decision Hjelmbak said: "I personally feel that the most important thing for her now is to focus on her health and get the help she needs and deserves."
Spears celebrated her 26th birthday at a Scandinavian Style Mansion event in December.

Kanye is booed at his own gig
HE may be the coolest rapper on the block, but that didn't stop KANYE WEST
getting booed at his own gig.
The American hip-hopper took to the stage for his Bonnaroo Music & Arts
Festival amid jeers fom tired fans after leaving them waiting for almost two
hours.
The Gold Digger star switched his 8.15pm start time on Saturday to 2.45am on
Sunday, becoming the first major act to start a mainstream festival show so
late.
But his fans grew impatient after waiting until 4.30am local time in Tennessee
before their hero showed up.
The crowd had been forced to sit through a midnight torrential downpour to see
Kanye's early morning set.
They had booed for almost an hour before his arrival and they weren't about to
stop when he appeared.
One fan said: "He had to work really hard to win everyone over."

Britain's Got Talent Loser Faryl Still Tipped For Fame
Despite her shock defeat on ‘Britain's Got Talent‘ last night Simon Cowell has predicted opera singer Faryl Smith is set to become a massive star.
The 12-year-old was a hot favourite to win the ITV talent show final yesterday, but lost out to dancer George Sampson - but, according to judge Cowell, Faryl is better than established opera star Katherine Jenkins.
He tells the Sunday Mirror, “I know she says Katherine is her idol but she is far better than her. She is by far the most talented youngster I've ever heard. When she opens her mouth her voice is just incredible."
"We've uncovered an absolutely massive singing talent. Full stop."
Faryl has also been likened to former child star Charlotte Church, and the Welsh singer’s former manager Jonathan Shalit says the youngster is set to make a fortune.
"Faryl has the potential to earn far more than Charlotte. She could easily earn £20million before her 20th birthday," he claims.

Angelina Jolie makes surprise visit to Baghdad
UN goodwill ambassador and Hollywood star Angelina Jolie has travelled to Iraq on a humanitarian mission and met with officials to demand help for people displaced by the war.
Although a scheduled press conference at the US embassy was cancelled, the Oscar-winning actress spoke to CNN telling the station that she wanted more to be done for the Iraqi families driven from their homes.
The 32-year-old said: "There are over two million displaced people and there never seems to be a real coherent plan to help them. There's lots of good will and lots of discussion but there seems to be a lot of talk at the moment and a lot of pieces that need to be put together."
The US embassy in Baghdad confirmed that Jolie had lunch with US troops serving in Iraq and had held a meeting with their top commander General David Petraeus, senior diplomats and Iraq's minister for displaced people.
A US embassy official told AFP: "She is here in her official capacity as a UN goodwill ambassador to meet with US, Iraqi and NGO officials to discuss internally displaced persons."
She also held talks in Baghdad's fortified Green Zone with the UN head of mission Staffan di Mistura and there were also plans for her to meet Iraq's Prime Minister Nuri al-Maliki, a US official said.
Jolie told CNN: "Of the two million internally displaced, it's estimated 58% are under 12-years-old. It's a very high number of people in a very, very vulnerable situation and a lot of young kids".
"So far, the different US officials I met with and different local people I've met with all have shared concerns, very, very strongly. They have spoken out about the humanitarian crisis, but there seems to be a block in," said the star.
Jolie continued: "What happens in Iraq and how Iraq settles in the years to come is going to affect the entire Middle East. And a big part of what it's going to affect, how it settles, is how these people are returned and settled into their homes and their community and brought back together and whether they can live together and what their communities look like."
She added: "It's in our best interest to address a humanitarian crisis on this scale because displacement can lead to a lot of instability and aggression."
Jolie is no stranger to the country. In August 2007, she met some of the 1,200 Iraqis stranded on the border between Iraq and Syria and appealed for more international support for those affected by the Iraq conflict.
During that tour, Jolie left UNHCR officials to visit privately with US and other multinational forces based in the area.
The following month, she launched a $150m appeal by UNICEF, the UN's fund for children, and the UN High Commissioner for Refugees to help educate 1m children affected by the war.

Rupert Everett: An Army of Dumb
Why can't egocentric actors just learn to shut their mouths?
English idiot Rupert Everett just bashed British soldiers by saying, "They are always whining about the dangers of being killed. Oh my God, they are such whimps now!"
Unfortunately, he continued on. "The whole point of being the Army is wanting to get killed, wanting to test yourself to the limits," he told the Telegraph. "Now you have to fly 15,000 ft. above the war zone to avoid getting hit. I don't think there is any point in having wars if that's how you're going to behave. It's pathetic. All this whining!"
Because it's real tough being an actor.

Ashlee Simpson on baby rumors “time will tell”
Ashlee Simpson is still remaining mum about her widely reported pregnancy.
The singer — who recently announced her engagement to Fall Out Boy rocker Pete Wentz — managed to dodge talk of her impending motherhood yet again on the Today show Friday morning when Matt Lauer prodded about “expanding the family.”
“Well, you know, thats been going around for about a year now, so only time will tell with that,” Ashlee answered.
And getting away from talk about her personal life, Ashlee, 23, quipped, “But I am giving birth to my record [Bittersweet World]. Thats my new baby.”
